Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ will soon support ARCore for augmented reality apps

ARCore is Google's new augmented reality platform. Project Tango was deprecated in December, and ARCore intends to carry forward where Tango had left off. Last year, Google launched an early preview of ARCore for select devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+, Galaxy Note 8, Google Pixel and Pixel XL, Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL.

ARCore 1.0 was launched last month, and Google announced plans to bring it to more devices such as the OnePlus 5, Galaxy S7/Edge, ASUS ZenFone AR, LG V30/V30+ (on Oreo), and more. With ARCore 1.0, developers can now publish AR apps on the Play Store, and Google announced new features such as improved environmental understanding when a user places virtual assets on textured surfaces like posters, furniture, toy boxes, books, cans, etc. The company also stated that it's partnering with other device makers to enable ARCore in new and upcoming phones in 2018. The list of partners included companies like Samsung, Huawei, LG, Motorola, ASUS, Xiaomi, HMD Global/Nokia, ZTE, Vivo, and Sony.

The Samsung Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9+ were launched at Mobile World Congress in February. The phones went on sale last week, but ARCore support hasn't been enabled yet. This is changing soon, as Github shows that ARCore for both devices will be enabled in the coming weeks.

This is good news for adoption of ARCore. ARCore has the potential to bring a new class of augmented reality apps, ranging from gaming to shopping and home. The barrier to ARCore adoption is the fact that it's enabled on very few devices as of now, but this is set to change this year. Also, the Galaxy S9 and the S9+ are certain to be hugely popular phones, so ARCore looks set to have a bright future.
